2021: Singapore
Following in the footsteps of previous Global City Studio ‘virtual visits’ – Qujing – China in 2020 as current travel restrictions continued to deny any opportunity for the Global Studio to travel.
The Global City Studio engaged and collaborated with ‘local’ hosts from the Architecture Department of the National University of Singapore (NUS) to act as our City Context Correspondents, Advisors and Urban Advocates on a weekly basis throughout the Semester as the Studio ventured urbaneering – speculating about Sub-City Interventions and the Transformative Potential of Architectural Radicalism.
The Studio speculated on a new typography, the ‘(Vertical) Sub-City’; the creation of an inner-city community within the ‘City’ which offers a diverse range of vibrant uses, private and public. The new neighbourhoods integrated with the existing and incorporated a mix of residential, cultural, social and public spaces strategically located at ‘high- rise’ levels inserted as a super-density cluster supercharging and transforming an existing urban ‘archetype’. 2022: Seoul

The Global City Studio engaged and collaborated with ‘local’ hosts from the from the Architecture Department of Seoul National University (SNU), and the architectural studio – Populous to act as our City Context Correspondents, Advisors and Urban Advocates throughout the Semester as we ventured urbaneering – speculating about Sub-City Interventions and the Transformative Potential of Architectural Radicalism.
Also, party to a Lectures Series created by SNU relating our topic and the city of Seoul, its history, development, changing culture and architectural trends. The Global Cities Studio explored and speculating how Seoul, would be resilient to inevitable and unavoidable future change and expansion without the loss of identity and cultural vibrancy. With the assistance of our City Context Correspondents, we will speculate on that future change and react to it.

2023: Seoul
A 14-day Study Tour of Seoul was an integral part of the student’s coursework and involved a site analysis for a speculative city intervention which was developed over the Semester into a proposal for a dynamic mixed-use sub-city. Students collaborated with architectural students from Seoul National University of Science and Technology through workshops in characterising the culture of Seoul through the study of prescribed districts – Hongdae, Gangnam, Digital Media City and Changgyeong Palace to determine how to best inform the brief for a dynamic mixed-use intervention. The students also visited the architectural studios of Doojin Hwang and Minsuk Cho for a presentation of their projects and open discussion. There was a planned excursion to the Demilitarized Zone on the border with North Korea as part of the city historical analysis. Our host professor – Sunggi Park attended our student presentations/reviews throughout the semester by joining us online. Credits
