Introduction >
This microsite showcases the design projects of 2nd year Bachelor of Design in Architecture (SD-90009) students at the Abedian School of Architecture. It highlights the students’ vision for alternative future cities to address sustainability, urban density, infrastructure and communities.
With 56% of the world’s population living in cities, our urban built environment faces increasing pressure on its transportation networks, waste infrastructure, social marginalisation and culture gentrification. How do we produce differences in a globalised urban culture of same-ness? Over the past three years (2021 – 2023), the Global Cities Design Studio (ARCH13-129) seek to radically re-consider cities and their formation through ideas of ‘urbaneering’ and ‘urban accupuncture’, using fast-growing Asian Pacific cities such as Singapore and Seoul as testbeds for new concepts of urban living in vertical, high density mixed-use communities. The Design Studio was funded by the New Colombus Plan, which allows students to engage with distinguished universities in the Asian Pacific Region. In 2023, students travelled to Seoul for workshops and site visits.
The Abedian School of Architecture are incredibly thankful to the staff and students at the Seoul National University, Seoul Technical University and the National University of Singapore for their engagement and participation in the programme.
